This week we celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Mother (a Holy Day of Obligation.) Mass will be celebrated at 6 PM (Thursday Aug 14) and 8 AM and 7 PM (Friday Aug 15). Catholic Christians have honored our Blessed Mother since the time of the apostles, and on this day we celebrate her entrance, body and soul, into the resurrected glory which Jesus promises us all. We continue to discover how ancient Marian devotion really is. At Nazareth, the words Chaire Mariam Hail Mary are legible on a column of an ancient building found deep under the present day Byzantine basilica of the Annunciation. The name Mary was engraved (and added to the angel s greeting as recorded in the Scriptures), so the words are undoubtedly intended as, and are a form of, an intercessory prayer from the first centuries of the Church. Our parish has always had a deep devotion to our Blessed Mother. Let us continue to ask Mary s prayers and follow her example of selfless service.
Christian Initiation of Adults - With September around the corner, it is time to begin preparations for the inquiry stage for those who wish to become Catholic. If you, your spouse or a friend/neighbor is interested in learning more about the Roman Catholic Church, beginning or renewing your relationship with Jesus and joining in our life of prayer and service here at St. Aloysius, please call me (886-2235) at the rectory. You are also welcome to contact the Director of Christian Initiation, Gaye Boyer (472-7317). All preparation sessions are held in our Blessed Mother meeting room and the schedule will be flexible to assist the schedules of those who wish to enter the Church this year, ordinarily, at the Easter Vigil. If you have any questions or concerns, I would be happy to help you at any time.
Parish Finance Council ( Pat McMullen, Gary Bradley, Jack Calandra, Mary Ann Earnest, H.C.
Lang, Ron Lynch, Carl McDermit, Bob Biter, Janet Stohon ) will meet tonight at 6:30 PM in the Blessed Mother Meeting Room. We will review the parish budget/ annual report. All in the parish are invited to attend this meeting.
Parish Stewardship Committee (Mickie Eberhart, Patty Pyo, Arnold Nelen, Leona Shuty, Dave Rossman, Chelsey Garrett, Don Scanlan) - will meet Monday night (August 11) in the Blessed Mother Room. We will discuss new fund-raising ideas for our ongoing parish life. All in the parish are invited to attend this meeting.
Religious Education The first day of 2008-2009 Religious Education classes for our young people will be Sunday September 7, 2008. Registration will take place for new students at 9 AM in the Community Center. All students will attend the 10:30 AM Mass together after the first class. You will be receiving an envelope containing important information and the Religious Education Program handbook and schedule. Please read the enclosed material and return the form to the Religious Education Office. HOLY DAY: This Friday, August 15, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, a holy day of obligation for Catholics. The Falling-asleep of May came to be celebrated in the East and in Rome as early as the fifth century. We believe decay was not allowed to touch Mary s Body for she had given birth to Christ, the Lord of all life, in the glory of the incarnation.
Check the parish schedule for Masses Thursday evening and Friday.
FATIMA DEVOTIONS: The Franciscan Friars, TOR, from Loretto, invite you to participate with them in celebrating the Fatima Devotions on Wednesday, Aug. 13th at 7 PM (in case of inclement weather the devotion will be at the Basilica of St. Michael).
