We thought it might be a good idea to convene a brief meeting where we can discuss how we might be able to support one another and exchange ideas.

If you are interested and would like to meet others from DIS, talk about your initiative or simply find out more, please join us on Thursday, October 8, 16:30-17:30, DIS Conference Room (Annen Campus).

Please send an e-mail to Kathrin Hörschelmann (Kathrin.horschelmann@gmail.com), if you would like to attend.

It would also be very helpful, if you could include a brief note about your idea/activity, but it’s equally fine, if you just want to attend to find out more.

If the day and time are not good for you, but you would like to keep in touch, please also let Kathrin know.

Depending on interest, we can set up a second meeting after the Fall break.

Very best, Kathrin Hörschelmann, James Glendinning Book Exchange Dresden International School is holding a monthly book exchange.

The idea is simple: For every book brought into school, a gently used or older book can be taken.

The first book exchange of this school year will take place on Tuesday October 6th, in the afternoon (14:45 and Wednesday the 7th, in the morning (7:45 - 9:00). The exchange takes place in the atrium of Building B. All students and parents are welcome to come and exchange books.

If you do not have a book to exchange, you are still welcome to take a couple of our older books. If you would like to make a small donation of your discretion, we will accept it.

You can contribute to the success!

Ginger bread is already available in the supermarkets. That is a clear indication that the Christmas season is getting closer. Hence also the preparations for the annual Christmas Bazaar organized by the PTA, which depends, of course, on the support of many helping hands from students, teachers and parents.

Any help is welcome!

We would like to encourage you again this year to be part of the organization, so that the work load is split up.

Develop ideas – Stage program – Booths – Activities – Crafts – Advertisement – Catering There are many ways to get involved. Join us! Soon, the organization team will be meeting for the first time. The final date will be appointed soon. If you are interested, you can contact us anytime by email (pta@dresden-is.de).

Together we can make a difference!

Yours, Jane Dietrich-Schendel (PTA President) Let's cook together We would like to invite all passionate cooks to join our ladies cooking experience. This is a great opportunity to exchange our favorite recipes and to sample food from different countries. We will be cooking at a parent’s home. The fun and curiosity of different cultures will be to the fore.

We are starting on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 11:00 by starting off with the Persian cuisine. Everyone who likes to rattle the pots and pans is asked to register via email (marketing@dresden-is.de). The number of participants is limited due to the individual kitchen sizes.

We very much look forward to our joint experience and the culinary delicacies.

Yvonne & Pia Your first cooking hosts Preschool Love & Logic Parenting Class Wednesdays, 9:00-11:00 at G18 in the EYP Library Starts: October 28, 2015 Ends: December 16, 2015 Cost: 15 € (for the workbook) For parents with children up to age 6.

Love and Logic Early Childhood Parenting Made Fun! provides parents an opportunity to gain practical and proven tools for raising respectful, responsible, happy kids. The primary mission of the Love and Logic organization is to make the world a better place by helping parents raise great kids…kids who will grow up to be great citizens!

Please sign up for the class with Ms. Larson (in person at the G18 office or via email). It is important for participants to commit to attending the entire class series because of the relationships we build from start to finish.

Here are impressions of past participants of the class:

The love and logic course really helped to bring the calm back into my parenting. After learning the techniques described in the course I could handle new challenging behaviour in a calm and consistent way. Joyce and Lilach helped us to translate the course to our own situation and style of parenting.

Kayli The parenting class was the biggest fruit I have ever gotten in Germany!

Akika Please feel free to contact Joyce with any questions: jlarson@dresden-is.de.

Message from Mrs Beveridge Dear Parents, The school year is now well underway. We’re coming up to the end of our first unit of inquiry, and will soon reflect on our students’ learning and progress. One of the many benefits of using the PYP framework to guide student learning is the emphasis on reflection – students and teachers thinking about what has been learned, what went well, and what can be improved upon. As teachers, this process helps us continue to meet students’ learning needs.

Parents often ask about how we assess our students' learning. Determining students’ progress and next steps for continued growth requires a combination of formative and summative classroom based assessment.

Formative assessment is ongoing and is embedded in just about everything we do. It informs and shapes our instruction. Formative assessment helps teachers understand how to support and develop knowledge, skills and understanding. Formative assessment practices monitor student learning and give teachers feedback about what students need to do to improve their learning. It also helps teachers and students identify strengths and weaknesses, and helps to target areas that need work.

Summative assessment is used to evaluate student learning. The goal of summative assessment is to evaluate student learning at the end of an instructional unit by comparing it against a standard or benchmark.

Formative assessment plays a big role in our inquiry cycle. Please come to our PYP Parent Inquiry Night on November 24 at 18:30 to find out more!

We all enjoyed seeing so many of you at our annual Back to School Night. A big thanks to our PTA for providing us with sandwiches and drinks. On this note, I would like to personally welcome one of our newer members to the PTA. As our Chair of the Welcoming Committee, Mr. Cesar Mario Garcia Galvez will serve as a contact for new families at DIS as a parent representative. Mr. Galvez is fluent in English, German, and Spanish, and we are very pleased to have him working with us!

Please note that there are some changes to our PYP Coffee Morning and PYP Assembly!

This week’s PYP Coffee Morning and PYP Assembly hosted by Grade 5 has been re-scheduled to:

Thursday, October 1 8:30 Coffee, 9:00 PYP Assembly We hope to see you there!

IB Preparation and Revision Courses: Grades 10, 11 and 12 We often receive information from various companies that offer short and intense IB preparation or revision courses during the school holidays. Some of our students have attended these courses, particularly in Grade 12, and found them beneficial. Below are three links to companies with whom students have had positive experiences.

Lanterna Education - courses in the UK and Sweden - www.lanternaeducation.com IB Wise - courses in Vienna - www.ibwise.com Oxford Study Courses - courses in the UK, Italy, Brussels and Belgium - www.osc-ib.com Please contact me if you would like any more information or guidance.

All the best, Ms Bassam-Coles (DP Coordinator) DP Assessment Calendar Assessment Calendars have been issued to all our students. They provide an overview of the important deadlines for work that is sent to the IB. This work contributes to their final grades in each subject. It is critically important that all deadlines are met and we ask parents to be aware of when their child has deadlines in their subjects. Please see the attached calendars and print out a copy for future reference.
