The speakers say, “Adverts on junk food have been banned on children’s television but those who sell

sweets, toys and fizzy drinks don’t want to give up without a fight. I spoke to Helen Pidd about their

new battleground – the internet.” “Well, they’ve had to change their tactics a bit because ever since the first of April this year there’s been a ban on advertising any products which are deemed to be high in fats, sugar or salt in or around programmes that are popular with children. So it means that advertisers have basically diverted their budget away from television advertising and onto the internet.” Therefore the correct answer is E (to promote unhealthy food).

Q1/C The speaker says, “So some brands, for example Skittles, the sweet manufacturer, they have set up a profile on Bebo, one of the social networking sites that is popular with children, and they invite children to be the brand’s friends and then the idea is that the friends then tell their friends and then that way the message is spread.” Therefore the correct answer is C (tell others to do the same).

Q2/G The speaker says, “They love it. In most cases they are actually advertising for the business. The Skittles deal, for example, is a six-figure deal. And from Bebo’s point-of-view both the brand and Bebo benefit. Bebo gets some money and then the brand gets what they call free brand ambassadors, which are very valuable, which is the thousands of children, all users on Bebo, who sign up to be friends.” Therefore the correct answer is G (make money from it as well).

Q3/A The speaker says, “What you can do is you can download skins, which is basically like virtual wallpaper…you can draw Skittles pictures. They have got a competition running at the moment which invites users to design their own Skittles advert, which might then be seen on TV.” Therefore the correct answer is A (take part in a competition).

Q4/I The speaker says, “Another popular outlay is using chat programmes like MSN Messenger, which is now actually called Windows Live Messenger. These are those programmes that kids use to talk to one another. You get a friends list and then you just type– you might actually have a normal conversation or it might just be via text.” Therefore the correct answer is I (are provided with a list of friends).

Q5/F The speaker says, “If you talk to the advertisers about the ethics of what they are doing, what they say is that it’s much more ethical than advertising on TV because there is no push involved. They are not forcing it on children, children are choosing for themselves whether they want to be a part of it.” Therefore the correct answer is F (are free to decide if they want to participate).

Q6/H The speaker says, “The flipside of that, of course, is that it’s very difficult to know whether children really understand the extent to which they are being part of this marketing process and also it’s much harder for parents to monitor what their children are doing.” Therefore the correct answer is H (realize what they are taking part in).

Justifications 0/A Naomi says that the use of 'Hey Naomi' illustrates what the role of coded language in society is. She says, “The fact that you said 'hey' rather than 'hello' or 'hi' told me the kind of relationship that you want to establish with me just with that very simple word.” She explains, “I got [from 'Hey'] that you want to have an informal relationship and this is not the opera and that we want to have an alive conversation that talks about things that people identify with.” Therefore the correct answer is A (wants to have a lively, casual conversation).

B is incorrect because Naomi doesn't mention this idea.

C is incorrect because this aspect is not mentioned.

D is incorrect because wanting to have an informal relationship doesn't necessarily mean that one is an easy-going person.

Q7/A Naomi says, “The most important thing it [coded language] reveals is that we're civilized, socialized human beings, that is, in the process of learning your language you don't just learn the grammar rules, you don't just learn the vocabulary, you learn what it is you say to whom when.” Therefore the correct answer is A (what to say in a specific situation).

B is incorrect because the aspect of slang isn't specifically mentioned.

C is incorrect because knowing how to be sociable is not an aspect of language learning.

D is incorrect because the idea of a language suitable for most situations contradicts the idea of adjusting your language to the situation.

Q8/C Naomi says, “One of the things we gain [by using coded language] is being able to say things we couldn't have said otherwise.” Therefore the correct answer is C (express what we’re afraid to say normally).

A is incorrect because we don't express our emotions directly: we speak in a “veiled way.” B is incorrect because although text messages are mentioned several times it's never said that coded language helps us to write them more easily. Later Naomi even explains that text messages can be crafted quite carefully even though it looks as if the text message was written quickly.

D is incorrect because we don't speak directly. We speak in a “veiled way”, that is, we use coded language.

Q9/D Naomi explains this in the following way, “So for example, let's say, for the sake of argument, I've got a real crush on you and I don't want to say that to you in person. So I send you a text message where I work really hard to be as in-groupy as I can to make you think I'm the cool kind of person that you want to have a relationship with. And I've crafted my language even though it looks as if it's short, you think it's got to be done quickly, but that doesn't necessarily follow. An awful lot of this coded language that particularly we do on cell phones as text messages if you're the right age, if you're a teenager, if you're a young adult, you think about very carefully. And it's a way of packaging myself, of saying I want you to see me as being a particular kind of person.” The correct answer is D (can be used to create a certain image of oneself).

A is incorrect because she says it may look as if it's done quickly but this is not necessarily the case.

B is incorrect because she only talks about “young adults”; she never says that text messages are becoming more popular among adults.

C is incorrect because from the way she describes text messages we see they can contain a lot of meaning.

Q10/B Naomi explains why we can't say what we mean in the following way, “Part of it is this dance that we do in social relationships that’s nothing to do with contemporary language in particular. It's something we've been doing for a long, long time. You know, how soon can I say what in terms of familiarity, in

2Keys and justifications HÖREN E3

terms of making a step forward if it's an interpersonal romantic relationship, and how do I have to think about this? But we do this kind of thing anyway. So it’s used to be what should I wear on this date, you think this looks... is this neckline too low, or what shall I put in my hair? It's the same kind of behaviour. This one happens to be in language and it happens to be in the contemporary technology.” Therefore the correct answer is B (choosing suitable clothes for a specific event).

A is incorrect because she talks about choosing an outfit and not an activity for the evening.

C is incorrect because she never mentions the aspect of small talk.

D is incorrect because she doesn't talk about what others wear but about a person's own choice of outfit.

Justifications 0 The test takers are asked to name what the Simpsons writers are proud of.

The speaker says, “the scene that they are very, very proud of that involves Bart Simpson skateboarding naked which they were very worried they might not be able to get past the film certifiers….” Therefore the correct answer is Bart skateboarding naked.

Q11 The test takers are asked to name one important topic that the Simpsons deals with.

The speaker says, “it takes on some pretty big themes, it’s about environmentalism, global warming and religious fundamentalism as well as people banging their heads….” Therefore the correct answer is environmentalism or global warming or religious fundamentalism.

Q12 The test takers are asked to find out who watches the Simpsons.

The speaker says, “it’s not only that different ages can understand different things....” Both 5-year-olds and grown-ups appreciate the Simpsons, but for different reasons.

Therefore the correct answer is of different ages.

Q13 The test takers are asked to find out the role of the Simpsons for other series like South Park.

The speaker says, “the cartoons that owe their existence to the Simpsons, most obviously South Park.” Therefore the correct answer is role model.

Q14 The test takers are asked to find out what is important to the writers of the Simpsons.

The speaker says, “There is one thing they [the writers] are really, really dogmatic about […] It’s the rate of gags they’ve got to keep up […] kicking jokes around 350 times and then deciding on the 351st time that actually it has stopped being funny.” Correct answers must refer to the high number of jokes.

Q15 The test takers are asked to name a specific detail about a young Simpsons writer.

The speaker says, “There are animators working on the Simpsons now […] I spoke to one woman who is 30, 31 I think, who grew up with it as a kid and remembers it from Germany.” Therefore the correct answer is German animator.

Q16 The test takers are asked to name the main difference between the Simpsons characters and those in a soap opera.

The speaker says, “There is this framework – it’s an extremely strict framework, the fact that every storyline has to resolve itself by the end, the fact that nobody can develop or change like they would do in a soap opera or lots of dramas. Baby Maggie has learned one word in the course of 20 years.” Therefore the correct answer is (characters) don’t change/develop.

Q17 The test takers are asked to name the reasons why different writers can join the Simpsons team, The speaker says, “Because of that strict framework it means that actually huge numbers of writers can come in and add their ideas and gags.” Therefore the correct answer is strict framework.

Q18 The test takers are asked to name who had to get ready to produce a movie, “I think it’s [the movie] taken this long because they just needed to get to a point where they had the core original team in a position to make something like this.” Therefore the correct answer is core original team.

Justifications 0 Test takers are asked to say what happened to the man the picture is dedicated to. In the recording, the speaker states that "Picasso painted this picture in just a single day in April 1952. It was meant as a memorial to the Greek communist activist Nikos Bellianis who'd been executed two weeks before."

Therefore the correct answer is he was executed.

Q19 Test takers are asked to name one of the characteristic objects which can be seen in the painting. The speaker says, "Picasso took traditional elements from memento mori paintings - including the skull and the flickering candle."

Therefore the correct answer is skull or (flickering) candle.

Q20 Test takers are asked to say what the first step is when producing house paint. The speaker says, "You can tell it's a house-paint because they use oil which they would boil up to 240 centigrade."

Therefore the correct answer is to boil.

Q21 Test takers are asked to say why ingredients like chalk are mixed into house paint. The speaker says, "And then they would add materials to dry the oil and thicken it - things like chalk, talc and kaolin."

Therefore the correct answer is dry/thicken it.

Q22 Test takers are asked to say what specialists need to do to say for sure that an artist has used house paint. The speaker says, "And Picasso is thought to have always had a tin of black and white house paint in his studio and often used it on paintings. But it's quite difficult to identify without analysis."

Therefore the correct answer is analyze it.

Q23 Test takers are asked to say why one of the white paints that Picasso has used creates a very hard and solid surface. The speaker says, "The reason it makes a stiff paint is because it absorbs lots of oil."

Therefore the correct answer is absorbs lots of oil.

Q24 Test takers are asked to name one element the other white paint contains. The speaker says, "The other white paint he used has zinc in it and titanium."

Therefore the correct answer is zinc/titanium.

Q25 Test takers are asked to say where in the picture you can see a black paint creating a runny effect.
